Northwestern Mutual Makes 5-Year Commitment of $50,000 to University of Louisville to Establish Diversity Scholarship

Northwestern Mutual Financial Network—Louisville and the Northwestern Mutual Foundation have together committed a total of $50,000 to fund one $5,000 scholarship per semester for an outstanding African American, Hispanic, Asian, or Native American junior or senior majoring in the College of Business at the University of Louisville. Scholarship recipients will gain exposure to financial services and learn business concepts that are applicable in any field through interaction with a financial professional with The Northwestern Mutual Financial Network.

Eligibility Requirements

Who: African-American, Hispanic, Asian, Native American applicants entering their junior or senior year with a major in the University of Louisville’s College of Business.

Selection: Scholarship recipients will be notified in early December with funds available in early January, 2010.

Northwestern Mutual – Kentucky & Southern Indiana Announces Fall 2009 DiversityScholarship Winner

On September 9th, Northwestern Mutual – Kentucky & Southern Indiana held a ceremony to announce the fall 2009 Diversity Scholarship winner. Members of the selection committee, University of Louisville faculty, and representatives of Northwestern Mutual gathered to celebrate Jose Miguel accepting the $5,000 scholarship

The Diversity Scholarship program seeks to cultivate the education and pre-professional efforts of diverse students. Miguel exemplified Northwestern Mutual’s values of courage, character and commitment. In his essay, he stated, “I am a firm believer that anything worth having is worth the hard work; there is always room for improvement.

The selection committee was made up of six members from the Louisville community (Renea McClure, Deborah May, Michele Lawlis, Tim Findley, Ralph E. de Chabert and Dr. Mordean Taylor Archer. A donation has been made to Junior Achievement, in their honor, as a token of Northwestern Mutual's appreciation.

Jose Miguel is a University of Louisville sophomore in the Honors Program where he will be double majoring in Finance and Accounting. Jose is a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society and the Finance Club. He is a volunteer for the Salvation Army food kitchen and the Brooklawn Child and Family Services Center.
